Plastics and rubber materials, with their related processing and application, contribute very significantly to the expanding manufacturing sectors of both national and regional economies. Finished plastic and rubber products have a major influence on the quality of our daily life.

The Plastics and Rubber Institute of Singapore (PRIS) is the national professional body established for members who are in those businesses related to plastics and rubber as described above. It acts as the focal point and centre for networking for members and assists in promoting the interests of its members through regular technical meetings, seminars and conferences and visits to manufacturing plants and industrial sites, etc.

The PRIS also has an important role in establishing sound ethical guidelines, through its professional grades of membership, and for maintaining high standards of education and professional competence in the science, engineering and technology of plastics and rubbers.

Date:       July 27, 2009 (Monday)
                  Time:       6.45pm
Venue:     LT 4 (next to library, see attached location map)
                  Speaker:  Dr Lau Soo Khim
Topic   :   Ready to venture into plastic optical lens manufacturing?

Abstract of the Presentation:

In ISO/TC 172 Approved Business Plan, 2004, it is noted that of the total US$75 billions global market size for (glass and plastic) lenses, close to US$24.5 billions come from opto-electro system and US$31.9 billion is attributed to ophthalmic goods.  Optical lenses are also used in photonic applications.  While there are limitations to the use of plastic lenses for very high precision applications, plastic optical lenses are widely used in many of other applications such as camera phone, scanner, etc..  In this presentation, the speaker will share with the audience the market share for optical lenses, entrance barrier to this market, key technical challenges in producing plastic optical lenses and some advanced technologies used in plastic optical lens manufacturing.

About the Speaker:
Dr  Lau Soo Khim, Research Scientist, Forming Group,  is trained in Polymer Science and Engineering, graduating with MSc and PhD from Loughborough University of Technology (UK).  She has obtained an Advanced Diploma in Plastic Technologies from Singapore Polytechnic.  Her knowledge in both polymer materials and process technologies gave her a competitive advantage in identifying source of problems when addressing processing issues.  She has working experience in both injection molding company as well as compounding company.  In the latter, she was involved in developing polymer compounds and blends to meet applications requirements, providing advice on processing methodologies and process troubleshooting, etc..  Her current main research areas in SIMTech are in development of advance technology for precision molding and development of polyolefin clay nano- composites for barrier packaging film.

Admission:
Email your confirmation of attendance to admin@pris.org.sg, indicating your name, contact number and company before July 24, 2009.  Admission is free for PRIS members.  The registration fee for non-PRIS members is $30.  Light refreshment will be served prior to the technical talk.
